Lippy of the day: Antipodes Aroha Natural Mineral Lipsticks

2 Oct

Antipodes Aroha Natural Mineral Lipsticks: Luxurious natural skincare range Antipodes have just branched into make-up, with a collection of three mineral lipsticks, all named after New Zealand locations.

Antipodes Aroha natural lipsticks

I love Antipodes skincare — can’t get enough of their Savour skin balm, Grapeseed cleansing balm or their divine face oils. The new lippys are a bit same-y in colour (all fairly natural looking) but the texture is lovely – a velvet semi-matte. Avocado oil one key ingredient; they also have cinnamon oil and sweet orange for a very subtle scent. These retail for $42 and Dusky Sounds is my pick. One thing that struck me about these lipsticks is how similar the packaging is to Living Nature’s (another natural New Zealand company.)

Antipodes vs Living Nature

Antipodes vs Living NatureBoth of the photos show Antipodes on the right and Living Nature on the left. The bullets seem to made of exactly the same materials with same size and texture. I guess when you choose sustainable packaging there are only a few options out there, but these two seem almost identical, especially with the swirly motif (Antipodes is a bird’s tail; Living Nature’s is a koru). They are both also quite a lot like Karen Murrell lipstick packaging (you guessed it, another Kiwi Natural brand!). I know that Living Nature has had a legal dispute with Oasis Beauty (NZ natural brand) for their circular fern-type logo as well, so I wonder what it thinks of these? Living Nature lipsticks cost $39.50 and there are 10 shades. I’m a fan of all these brands, but I wonder if their lipsticks might cause confusion in the market?

Here is the Dusky Sounds Pink swatch – very pretty!

Lippy of the day: By Terry Laque de Rose

22 Nov

By Terry Lacque de Rose lipglossBy Terry Lacque de Rose lipgloss: mmm, it’s oh so French, smells of roses and the texture is as light as creme brulee perfection — what more could you want? My mum bought me this duty-free from Paris, because my husband’s name is Terry. She would have bought more, but was somewhat taken aback at this previously unheard of brand’s tres high prices! Anyway, hot pink (second from left) has the ideal blue-ish fuchsia tone, and though the texture is quite thin and watery, it somehow yields impressive colour coverage and a nice soothing feel on lips. I can’t even tell you the shade name, because, just like with a favourite teddy bear, the details are ‘loved off’. xx

Lippy of the day: Revlon Just Bitten in Passion

21 Nov

Revlon Just Bitten Lipstain + Balm in PassionI’m devoted to my glosses, but when I’m after a colour that really lasts, a base coat of stain is just what I’m after. With Just Bitten Stain + Balm, Revlon have made this somewhat-scary genre (think pots of blood-red liquid) much more fun and friendly – and don’t you love a 2-for-1?

Just Bitten Lip Stain + Balm looks like a bright felt tip pen (canny marketing — makes you want to collect a whole a palette just like  in your school pencil case!), and comes with a block of clear balm on the other end.

It works best applied on a totally nude lip — here’s where I have a problem, as my lips don’t ever seem to go for more than a five-minute period without needing reapplication of something, be it Blistex or YSL Rouge Volupte. So, wipe product off with a tissue for best results, then draw on your ‘natural but better’ base with ease. This looks great on its own but is also excellent to make your favourite lipstick or gloss go the distance. Comes in 6 shades.

Who could resist this gorgeously packaged Pink Delicious Lipgloss collection from Bare Minerals? The shade names are enough to get you hungry: Strawberry Shortcake, 7 Layer Cake and Cupcake. Yes it’s time to start getting Xmas shopping sorted and this one couldn’t be cuter for a girlfriend’s gift. They’re vanilla scented (just barely) and contain lots of oils and extracts to keep lips soft and smooth. Indulge!

Lippy of the Day: Revlon Super Lustrous Lipgloss in Pink Pop

14 Oct

Revlon Super Lustrous Lipgloss in Pink PopRevlon Super Lustrous Lipgloss in Pink Pop really could be my Lippy of the Month (yes, it’s great enough to never get rotated out for new finds!). A few months ago I went to a charity ball, with our company’s client Revlon. Dutifully I stocked my purse with the correctly branded lippy for the night – no hardship as Revlon excel at lipstick and gloss. My Pink Pop was perfect for the evening – glossy and hot pink enough to be glamorous, but also soft and moisturising enough to mean no balm was needed in my tiny purse. Alas! It fell out of my bag and I had been mourning it for months, until a kindly fellow beauty editor returned it to me this week. Having suffered without it, now I love it even more!

Lippy of the day: Neutrogena MoistureShine Lip Gloss

3 Oct

Oh how I love my Neutrogena MoistureShine Lip Gloss in #60, aka ‘Razzie’ the ideal red raspberry shade, so flattering yet so bright and punchy. It’s the bottom shade on this grouping here:

Not available in New Zealand, save for the rare freebie affixed to the front of a Neutrogena sunscreen bottle (but then only in the boring beige), I have had to purchase on lucky trips away, bribe travelling friends, and now, get them online now that Drugstore.com does international shipping. But alas I fear even those stateside may not be able to get this exact colour anymore – Neutrogena has upgraded its range and while it is still the same formulation (it appears) the shades are all different. But alas, in the new mix, I cannot spy my beloved raspberry! Badly done, Neutrogena, badly done (although I do still love you x)

Lippy of the day: Revlon Colorstay Mineral Lipgloss in Continuous Coral

29 Sep

Revlon Colorstay Mineral Lipgloss in Continuous CoralIf you are thinking of branching out from pink or neutral gloss, my money’s on Revlon Colorstay Lipgloss in Continuous Coral. This is a really flattering bright colour, perfect for the start of spring. The texture is decently creamy for a long-lasting gloss, while the smell is a bit like a fruity cocktail – or shot! This is a great colour to bring out a tan, but still looks nice on my pasty winter skin. It’s taking me back to my coral virginity, which was lost when enticed to do so by the v compelling Cindy Crawford, back in the late 80s – Revlon’s ‘One Perfect Coral’ was deemed the ideal shade to suit anyone. I can’t help but think maybe the makeup artists were tired of making up entire colour collections and wanted an easy season that year! But you can still buy this shade, so it must have been a keeper. Love the matching blusher!

Lippy of the Day: Revlon Sugar Sugar Lip Topping

24 Sep

Revlon Sugar Sugar Lip FrostingRevlon Sugar Sugar Lip Frosting If you like you ice cream with sprinkles on top (a la Miss Fancy Nancy) , perhaps I can interest you in some Revlon Sugar Sugar Lip Topping? Sadly it is limited-edition, though you might be able to find some lurking online. This delicate, shimmery pixie dust is divine to add an extra glow-y allure to the centre of your pout (all over it might be a bit OTT, although doesn’t it look sexy at left?). It’s lightweight and smells/tastes pleasant – more than we could say for simply dousing lips in eye or cheek shimmer! As Fancy Nancy would say, ‘ooh la la tres deluxe!’

Lippy of the day: Chanel Rouge Allure Extrait de Gloss

22 Sep

Chanel Rouge Allure Extrait de GlossI’m sorry for devoting disproportionate space to expensive luxury glosses (really, I love a good cheapie!), but I can’t help myself with Chanel Rouge Allure Extrait de Gloss. Designed as a companion for the very Bond Girl Rouge Allure (you click the case to swiftly pop up the lipstick bullet), Chanel has once again made the packaging just as exiting as the treasure inside. It is said to be a long-lasting lipgloss – but who knows? I would think the very point of having a fabulous Chanel lipgloss like this would be to re-apply it as much as possible, in public and private, just for the sheer joy of it, constantly throughout the day! I am a people-pleasing good girl by nature, but am very much enjoying wearing Insolence.

Lippy of the day: YSL Rouge Volupte Perle in Sparkling Pink

20 Sep

YSL Rouge Volupte Perle rangeToday was my lucky day – a delivery of one of my ultimate lipstick faves – YSL Rouge Volupte. Now in pearlised shades for the new season, I’m loving #103 (Sparkling Pink – of course! Though occasionally I do veer into red or coral, it’s not often.) If you are looking for a super glossy, extremely smooth and soft lipstick (basically, a gloss in lipstick’s more sophisticated form), this is it. I’ve only just noticed the round mirror atop the lid, just the right size for surreptitious touch-ups – love it!
